![]() This no doubt has a lot to do with the scenario: it seems fairly obvious that Diddy has cast Dep into a predetermined role, and while the latter sometimes transcends that role, there are few surprises on Child of the Ghetto. He's a gifted rapper, and he seems plenty motivated however, there are too many moments over the course of this 20-track album when he seems adrift, like he's following marching orders rather than leading the procession. Dep, on the other hand, struggles to rise to the occasion. Diddy no doubt invested a lot into the album. As executive producer, Diddy does practically everything he can on Child of the Ghetto to make it a strong debut for Dep: guest appearances by Rakim and Kool G Rap, features for most of the concurrent Bad Boy roster, a multitude of first-rate productions (courtesy of the low-profile yet impressive in-house producers), a pair of radio-ready singles ("Special Delivery," "Let's Get It"), a few character-developing skits, and plenty of glossy photos in the CD booklet. Dep joined fellow Harlem rapper Black Rob during Bad Boy's early-2000s rebuilding era. Diddy 's line of successors to the departed Notorious B.I.G. Cobra Verde and Guided By Voices fans owe it to themselves to track down the records of this seminal band, and Come All Ye Faithless is a fine place to begin.Īnother in P. There's a debt paid to New York art punk bands like the Voidoids and the Patti Smith Group, as well as fellow Cleveland legends Pere Ubu, but Death of Samantha absorb their influences and rock on their own terms. ![]() Doug Gillard pours out fluid lead guitar melodies that can break into atonal skronk at will without jarring the listener, and the rhythm section of Dave Swanson and Steve-O is tight but loose enough to swing in and out of the beat. ![]() ![]() Vocalist John Petkovic has an idiosyncratic snarl that might take getting used to, but once overcome the literary bent of the lyrics emerges and his sneer becomes part of the poetry. Death of Samantha burn like a Midwestern Television with a dirtier, more physical punch. ![]() While all of their recorded output boasts high-caliber intellectual rock with as much muscle as brain, Come All Ye Faithless proves that the band was still progressing, so much so that they felt the need to break up, regroup, and re-form a few years later as Cobra Verde. Cleveland cult band Death of Samantha wrapped up their five-year run with this excellent swansong LP. ![]()
